Sharjah: The rise in foreigners coming to the UAE for complicated medical treatment bears testimony to the quality of health care in the country. In the latest case, a Malaysian woman contacted Sharjah-based doctors to treat her teenage daughter suffering from a disorder of the reproductive system. "She had two complete uteruses and two vaginas ... she experienced severe abdominal pain during her menstrual cycle," said Professor Dr Hossam Al Deen Hamdi, vice-chancellor for the Colleges of Medicine and Health Sciences and Chairman of Division of Surgery at University Hospital in Sharjah. Counterfeit medicine confiscated by Swiss customs is displayed during Swiss customs annual news conference at Euroairport in Basel-Mulhouse(Reuters) - A raft of new medicines pushed spending on drugs modestly higher last year, but the gains were curbed by weak prescription use as Americans avoided doctor visits, according to a report released on Wednesday. Overall U.S. spending on medicines reached $320 billion in 2011, up 3.7 percent from 2010, according to the report from IMS Health, a healthcare information and services company. The increase was just 0.5 percent on a per capita basis. Prescription use fell 1.1 percent nationally on a per capita basis, the report said. Patient office visits declined by 4.7 percent overall. ...

(University of Maryland Medical Center) Metformin, a drug widely used to treat Type 2 diabetes, may help to prevent primary liver cancer, researchers at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center report in the April 2012 issue of Cancer Prevention Research. The medication, which is derived from the French lilac, is being studied in connection with the prevention of a variety of cancers. This preclinical study is the first to focus on liver cancer.
