The Duchess of Cambridge has announced her first four charitable patronages. Hundreds of charities applied to have her as patron, and she has spent months researching before she made her choice. The former Kate Middleton has accepted honorary positions with the Art Room, the National Portrait Gallery, Action on Addiction and the East Anglia Children's Hospices. She will also volunteer with the Scout Association: she was a Brownie as a child. St James's Palace said the Duchess' choices reflect her interests in the arts, promotion of outdoor activity and supporting people in need.
Her choice of the addiction center is an interesting one. Reports say that when she and Prince William made many of their visits to homeless shelters the issue that always came up was addiction. Her choice of the children's hospices is another interesting choice -- the children there are facing life threatening illnesses. It is not an easy place to visit -- the children are gravely ill and the parents are grieving. The Duchess is said to have visited the children's hospice several times already.
Her interest in the arts is well-known and those charities round out her first choices. As for the Scouts, apparently she will be expected to go on weekend camping trips, just like all the other counselors. She also had to pass a criminal background check, which is a requirement for all Scout leaders working with children. CNN reports:

The Dollywood theme park commissioned the nation's largest flying eagle steel sculpture to accompany Wild Eagle, its new steel wing coast, which will open in March, 2012. The giant steel eagle features a horizontal wing span equivalent to a four-story building.
The sculpture was created by Canadian metal sculptor Kevin Stone. The sculpture weighs more than two tons and is made primarily of stainless and mild steel. It includes the individual creation and welding of thousands of intricate feathers.
Stone worked for six months creating the sculpture in Metal Animation Studio in Chilliwack, British Columbia.
Stone says, "I've always had a fascination and appreciation for nature and the vast array of wildlife that inhabit these lands, in particular the bald eagles that migrate annually throughout British Columbia during mating season."

The Wall Street Journal reports that Eastman Kodak Co. is making plans to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The 131 year old, iconic American company was founded by George Eastman. The company created the first disposable camera and the first digital camera. It popularized the concept of amateur photography and created color film for the film industry. It also produced the first film which used cellulose acetate base instead of
cellulose nitrate (which was highly flammable).
Kodak, which has 19,000 employees, wants to sell 1,100 valuable patents to raise cash. It's having trouble finding buyers, and a bankruptcy filing could help facilitate sales. When sales are run though the bankruptcy court buyers get a court order finalizing the sale, providing certainty. Sales of assets could be voided if the company later files bankruptcy.
Kodak is talking with potential lenders, who would provide
debtor-in-possession financing in the amount of $1 billion to keep the company afloat during the proceedings. The WSJ's sources said the company will file later this month or in early February. Kodak said in SEC filings that it will run out of cash if it cannot sell its patents or find a lender.

Research in Motion (RIM) has temporarily dropped the price for its BlackBerry Playbook 7-inch tablet to $299. The price for all three models - 16GB, 32GB and 64GB - is now $299.
